Feng Shui Chic

Looking for love? Try heart-shaped jewels. Power hungry? Go logo! Fuse fashion with feng shui to boost your creativity, power and sex appeal.

Since early times, the way people dressed in China spoke volumes about who they were and their station in life. For instance, Grand Emperor Huang Ti was the only person in all of China who was allowed to wear the color yellow because this hue was assigned exclusively to royalty.
But the caste implications of this lore tell us only half the tale. (If I were empress, forget yellow – I’d be the only one allowed to wear Prada. But that’s another story.) It turns out that the color yellow not only bespoke his imperial roots, it was also good feng shui according to the old Chinese Almanac.

Today we feng shui our houses and our offices, but unlike many people in eastern cultures, we don’t feng shui ourselves. Why hadn’t I – a fashionista and Asia-trained feng shui master – thought of this before? There had to be a reason a chic scarf can look so Audrey Hepburn in some circumstances but so pretentious and showy in others? Just as placement and position have everything to do with achieving the best flow of chi, or energy, in our physical environments, so, too, does our fashion sense. Thus the notion of Feng Chic was born.

How we dress, what accessories we wear, not to mention what perfume or makeup we use, has a direct result on our energy. Many fashion-savvy women recognize that the color, fabric and texture of their clothes inform the world of their focus and intention. While they may not be able to articulate why they dress as they do, they understand intuitively what works. Once you’ve mastered your feng shui style, you’ll able to empower yourself with the same force of any emperor’s new clothes.
