FENG SHUI FOR MODERN LIVING

This East Coast is a comfortable, stylish space where neutral color schemes and beautiful materials combine to form the perfect feng shui – friendly house.
Rounded corners and soft curves predominate in my home, and furniture and objects have all been placed in harmonious positions to enhance the natural flow of positive energy. Colors, shapes, textures and designs have all been carefully considered to maintain a perfect environment in which to live. I am very sensitive to my surroundings. Our homes are expressions of our life, and the choices we make in our interiors are personal reflections of our inner spirit.
East meets West in perfect harmony in feng shui design which combines the creative and pragmatic disciplines of feng shui with the energy creating elements of nature for the creation of new pathways for infinite changes and possibilities. The interiors and colors which we choose to be surrounded by, the clothing we wear, the way we entertain, the experiences of travel, our personal health care choices, our success at work, all of these things can be impacted upon and enhanced by embracing a feng shui lifestyle.
PERSONAL CHIC
For my own home materials have been selected that wear well and the furnishings are comfortable, practical and easy on the eye. Contemporary pieces of’ furniture sit side by side with antiques and ancient Chinese artifacts, and the pleasing combination of textures gives the room added depth. The rich chocolate-colored fabric covering the large sofa works well against the smooth surface of the ultra-modern coffee tables to create an evocative and stimulating scheme. Contemporary glass shelving keeps clutter down to a minimum and pictures, flowers and collectibles enhance the look. The resulting interior; though modern in feel, blends happily with the antiques and ancient Chinese artifacts.
Neutral walls provide an excellent canvas on which to offset some of my great pieces of art, in particular her 17th-century jade collection. A secretaire in the corner of the living room adds a daring splash of red and a plush, camel-colored rug skims the floor and completes the scheme.
Every detail in this room has been carefully considered to maintain balance.
CREATING GOOD FENG SHUI
Apparent throughout my home is the abundance of plants and flowers that create ‘life and growth’ energy; their rich green colors representing career, health, growth and longevity. I’ve incorporated many of the principles of feng shui throughout my house. “Feng shui is about lifestyle. I’m not saying everything you want will definitely happen, but try it and you will feel the balanced energy. The more you are in balance the more powerful you become.”
One room which is particularly balanced is the bathroom. Far from bland, this room is simply luxurious making it the ideal place to unwind from the stresses of the day. The use of round shapes, found in the mirror and the curve of the natural marble, adds softness that creates a personal heaven of privacy and contemplation in thoroughly relaxed surroundings. Expensive materials such as copper, wood and marble give it a luxurious feel. Again, attention to detail adds a final finishing touch exemplified by the urn. Its shape, contents and precise placement in the right hand corner of the bathroom are all part of the design to allow positive energy into the space.
CREATING POSITIVE ENERGY

Using round shapes, natural materials with contrasting yin and yang shapes and careful placement, to generate good energy flows.
My office is a far cry from a typical home office as it integrates beautifully into the rest of the scheme. It’s taking what nature provides and using it for balance. Have fun with it and be creative. I was creative with materials and textures used; they are carefully planned producing a beautifully designed natural space. The raw elemental beauty of the wooden paneled walls and legs of the desk are offset wonderfully against the stone floor. These natural materials reinforce a link with nature and have an effortless way of working well together. The room has been carefully styled, again using the principles of feng shui. Brown, the dominant color, has been used as a ‘grounding’ tone, and the curve of the back wall with its rectangular windows is important for harmony and energy. The edges of the glass table have been rounded to create a more positive flow of positive energy. Again flowers and plants add life to the space.
The large hospitable kitchen is sleek and modern yet softened by some wonderfully curvaceous shapes. The use of materials is texturally interesting as stainless steel combines effortlessly with wood to create a kitchen that forms the heart of the home. This sophisticated room has been carefully planned where equipment and storage units balance the architecture of the space and natural light flooding in from the glass doors provides the perfect light in which to cook by day.
The use of color and shape as well as the careful placement of furniture, art, mirrors and plants all help to create a space which is harmonious in which to live. It is an eclectic, simple and most inspirational way to decorate.
